JURY AWARDS INJURED PASSENGER $1.1M
A Middlesex County jury has awarded $1.1 million to the passenger of a car who was injured in a collision, despite evidence the severity of her injuries was directly related to her not wearing a safety belt. Lori Saul had temporarily removed her belt to retrieve a pair of shoes under her seat when her sister-in-law's car was struck by a vehicle driven by Antoine Azzi, who was making an illegal left turn. Saul suffered severe herniated discs in her neck and had to undergo surgery. The jury in the fault phase of Saul v. Azzi found Azzi entirely responsible for the collision, and the damages. The jury judged Saul's own actions to have been reasonable. It awarded $900,000 to Saul directly and $200,000 to her husband for loss of consortium. The Sauls were represented before Judge Bradley J. Ferencz by A. Todd Mayo of Mayo & Russ in East Brunswick . Azzi was represented by Steven H. Isaacson of David E. Rehe & Associates in Summit. 3-10-08
